As I mentioned earlier in this week's Top of the Pops,
The Searchers have recorded a wide and varied range of material.
Here's drummer and leader, Chris Curtis.
Now Chris,
where did you find your latest number?
Um, I heard it about, oh, 18 months ago.
We were touring with Big D.O.
and I knew the title and the original artist.
And I waited and waited and waited until the time was right.
And I was scared,
you know,
that anybody might do it in between.
So what we did was,
we wrote to a friend of ours in America,
you know,
they handle Elvis Presley in the States.
And I said, dear Larry,
get me this record.
And by the time the letter got to the New York offices,
he was on his way over here with Gene Pitney.
And so he came down to the session.
So I said,
do you remember it?
He said,
Gene Pitney used to sing it all the time,
he said.
So Gene played it on the piano over to Tony.
Gene was there as well, just to watch it?
Yeah.
Is it a bit like a Gene Pitney sort of song,
would you say?
Um,
I'd say a lot of people could have done it,
you know,
but I don't know if it would have been right for him.
I don't know.
Perhaps,
perhaps there's an element of truth in what you're saying,
Mr. Matthew.
Well, let's hope it's dead right for you.
I hope so.
It's going to be a big one.
The title is?
Goodbye, My Love.
Will you sing it right now?
Right now.
