I could listen all day to Sheryl Crow tell stories about the people she worked with on her new album, Threads, and we're so lucky to have her in the studio with us today, walking us through this entire album.
I mean, she knows all the stories behind writing them and getting the people in the studio to perform.
And this is actually a fun one because this is actually a song that you wrote with Chris Stapleton and ended up singing with James Taylor.
So tell me about Flying Blind.
Flying Blind actually is a song I wrote with Chris Stapleton.
We've written quite a lot together.
In fact, we're getting ready to write again.
We're going to write for his record.
And he's one of my favorite people to write with.
I've written with more people since I've lived in Nashville, but I really love writing with my buddy Jeff, and I love writing with Chris Stapleton.
He's so talented, and he has his own voice, and he's willing to try anything.
He has no ego about it.
You know, you throw something out, and we get there.
So we had this song called Flying.
Flying Blind, and we'd written it for the last record, and I didn't wind up doing it because I pretty much completed the record.
And I was thinking about James Taylor because he'd been such a huge influence on me.
And, you know, my earliest memories of listening to records were of listening to Mudside Slim and The Blue Horizon, laying on the carpeting, you know, listening next to the speaker of the Magnavox and learning all his stuff on the piano.
And so I had this song, and I called Chris and said, hey, I want to pitch this to James Taylor.
And so...
So I sent it to James, and, oh, man, you talk about a highlight.
Just hearing him on it and having this song I wrote with Chris, and Chris was so excited, and it just was a real joy.
I don't know if I've ever seen Chris Stapleton excited, but I think I'd be excited, too, if James Taylor sang one of my songs.
Here he is with Sheryl Crow.
It's Flying Blind, and you'll find it on her new album, Threads, which is available now.
