Hello, this is Merle Haggard, and at this time I'd like to introduce the pastor of Big Creek Baptist Church, a very inspiring man, Reverend Jimmy Whitlock.
We're glad you're here today in a very ordinary service at Big Creek. Not a thing unusual about it at all. We have this many lights and this many microphones every Sunday.
We welcome you to our church. We hope that this service will be a blessing to you, not just because of the special about it, but especially because it's going to be a worship service.
And before it is finished, you will recognize it as a worship service. We hope it will bless your heart in every way.
473. May we stand as we sing.
Trial's dark on every man that we cannot understand. All the ways we've come to lead us to that blessed promised land.
But if God is with us, and if love is with us, then we'll understand it better by and by.
By and by, when the morning comes.
When the saints of God are gathered home.
We will tell the story of how we overcome.
We will understand it better by and by.
All that there is when the failed disappointments that we made.
When we wander in the darkness, when we party and alone.
When we trust in the Lord and according to His word.
We will understand.
We will understand it better by and by.
By and by, when the morning comes.
When the saints of God are gathered home.
We will tell the story of how we overcome.
We will understand it better by and by.
I don't think it is necessary for me to tell you what's going on.
And in a few minutes you'll see it as it begins to unfold.
We're privileged to have with us this morning so many guests that it's impossible for me to begin naming them.
We have the band, the orchestra from the Merle Haggard band.
What a beautiful group they are.
I saw them perform last night.
We're honored to have with us this morning, the number one man in the recording business and country western music.
And as I will introduce him to you, I'm going to introduce him to you.
In a moment in a formal way.
I want him to give you the details of what's going on as far as this service is concerned.
He can do it much better than I can.
When I realize that a young man like this has spent so much of his life in prison.
And then to come out and make something of himself.
Not just be a name, but be a symbol of the grassroots heart of a people.
I told my young people in Sunday school this morning.
This is what it's all about.
This is what I've been trying to tell you.
That God created you for a purpose.
And when you find him, you'll find that purpose.
And I was deeply impressed.
And I'm sure you will be.
By the young man I met last night.
And it's our privilege to have Merle Haggard.
Merle.
Thank you very much.
And good morning.
Reverend Jimmy Whitlock.
Thank you.
It's our intention this morning to record a portion of an album.
And at the same time, we'd like to try to create.
Some enjoyable music for you.
Here at the Big Creek Baptist Church.
In the past, I've done a couple of tribute albums.
And this is sort of a tribute to an old friend of mine.
Who is truly number one.
Of course, I'm speaking of our Lord Jesus Christ.
This entire album is a tribute to him.
This morning, we'll have a well-known family in the vocal area.
We're speaking of the Carter family.
From the Johnny Cash show.
My wife, Bonnie Owens, will be helping on the vocal.
Also, the beautiful high voice of Anita Carter.
So, let's get started.
If we can call the musicians forward.
And all the people in the background.
Just come right on up.
